MJ Platform can help you automatically track waste if you are in a jurisdiction that does not integrate with Metrc. If you are integrated with Metrc, unfortunately they do not allow any third party integrators to automatically report waste to them, but the process of reporting waste is still quite simple!
In this article:
Tracking Waste In Metrc States
Tracking and reporting waste in jurisdictions with Metrc depends on the type of waste generated.
Harvest or Plant Modification Waste
When you report waste while harvesting plants or modifying plants, or when you report the quantity when during plant destruction, Metrc unfortunately does not allow the quantity to be synced to it externally. Follow this procedure to report waste to Metrc. You still report waste using the waste fields in MJ Platform, but you must also log into Metrc and report it there, too:
Log into Metrc.
From the top navigation bar in Metrc, click Plants.
Click the Harvested tab to see a list of your harvest batches, then click Report Waste. A window pops up where you can record the waste.
Report the waste for the batch:
Click the magnifying glass next to the Batch field to select your batch.
Enter the amount of waste in grams.
For harvests, waste should only be recorded as the trimmed plant waste, not the weight that is lost during drying.
From the Waste Type drop-down menu, select Plant Material.
Enter the date the waste was generated.
To report waste from another batch, click the blue Plus sign.
Click Report Waste.
Packaging or Audit Waste
When completing a packaging job, do not use the waste reporting or packaging loss fields. These fields exist for other integrators and legacy packaging jobs that may have existed in some states before Metrc was introduced, and are kept in for backwards compatibility.
Instead, reconcile the quantity to subtract the waste amount and select the appropriate reason. This adjustment and reason is pushed to Metrc. If the waste is from a packaging job, do this before completing the job.
Tracking Waste Without Metrc
Prerequisite: Enable Waste Tracking
In order to complete this procedure, you must have waste tracking enabled.
How Waste Tracking Works
If any waste is reported when completing a packaging job or harvest then the waste items will appear on the Inventory page under the Waste tab.
You will create a product master for each waste product to be tracked, and then assign any generated waste items to those products. You can then track the transportation by creating a Sales Order.
Setting Up Waste Tracking Per Product
In the same category as the products generating the waste, create a new subcategory for the different types of waste product(s). For example, in the Flower category, you might create a subcategory called "Fan Leaves":
Open the App Drawer, expand the Facility Settings menu and click Settings (Advanced).
Click Category Management.
Scroll to the category of the waste, which should be the same as the product(s) the waste comes from. At the bottom of the Sub-Category column, enter a name for the waste in the field and click the Add button (+).
If you are integrated with Metrc, map the subcategory to an appropriate Metrc category whose unit of measure matches the product master(s) holding the waste. Contact Metrc for details on which of their categories need to be used for the different types of waste as this may vary depending on your jurisdiction.
Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Update.
Create a product master for the waste, with the following required settings:
Set the category to the same category as the product generating the waste.
Set the subcategory to the newly created waste subcategory.
Clear the We purchase this item checkbox.
Disable all online availability options.
We recommend naming it the same as the product that generates the waste with the prefix "Waste: " added to the beginning. For example, "Waste: DarkStar Bulk Flower".
Tracking Waste
Waste inventory is created when you harvest plants in a cultivation facility or package bulk inventory.
Assign the applicable waste inventory to the newly created product by modifying the package.
Open the App Drawer and click Inventory.
Click the Waste tab. This displays the list of all the waste generated while waste tracking was enabled.
Click the applicable waste item. This expands its row to display its package IDs.
Select the applicable package IDs and click Modify Lot. This displays the Modify Packages page.
Next to the Item field, click Edit. This displays the Select Product window.
Select the category and subcategory of the product master for the waste, then select the product master from the generated list and click Confirm. This assigns the package inventory to the waste product and closes the Select Product window.
Select an appropriate adjustment reason and purpose.
Enter the date and time the waste was created and the date it was packaged.
Click Modify Package And Return. This prepares the package to be included in a Sales Order for waste disposal.
Create a Sales Order for the waste disposal, with the following required settings:
Set the Order Type to Waste Disposal Partner.
Set the Partner Name to your disposal partner.
Under Order Items, select each waste product to include in the disposal.
At the appropriate time, complete the Transfer.
