This article will go through the steps to install a recommended receipt printer on a Windows computer. These setup steps assume you are using a recommended receipt printer.

Note: Only printers purchased from our third-party PLS site are tested and recommended. If you purchase a printer from another source, it may also be compatible, but we often will not be able to help with issues for non-recommended hardware.

Install QZ Tray

If you haven't done so already, install QZ Tray.

Set up the printer

For Windows PC

Install the appropriate printer driver

  1. Go to the Star Micronics driver page and click the latest full version of the driver. A download prompt appears for the driver installer.

  2. Open the downloaded zip file and start the Autorun application file. A message box appears.

  3. Click Extract All, then Extract. The extraction process begins, and the extracted folder opens when the process completes.

  4. In the extracted folder, start the Autorun application file to open the receipt printer's application.

  5. Click Installation, then read the agreement and click I Accept. It may take a few moments for the installation to begin.

  6. Follow the prompts on the installer to install the receipt printer driver.

    • Note: During the installation, you may be prompted to restart your computer. Click OK to accept once you have saved any important information in other open applications.

  7. Click Finish when the installation completes.

Configure the printer driver

  1. On the keyboard, press Windows + R to open the Run dialog, then type "control printers" into the field and click OK. This opens the Devices and Printers window.

  2. Right-click the newly installed printer and click Printer properties.

  3. On the Device Settings tab, set the Installable Options to let the printer automatically pop open the cash drawer it's connected to, if any:

    1. Set Peripheral Unit Type to Cash Drawer.

    2. Set Peripheral Unit 1 to Document Top.

  4. Click OK. The printer is set up.

  5. Restart the computer to finalize the installation.

For Mac

Enable CUPS

Note: You need to be logged in as an administrator to do this.

  1. Press cmd⌘ + space on the keyboard.

  2. Enter Terminal into the field and press return on the keyboard.

  3. Enter cupsctl WebInterface=yes into the terminal and press return on the keyboard.

Install the printer

  1. Open Google Chrome, and in the address bar enter localhost:631

  2. Under the Administration tab, in the Printers section, click Add Printer.

  3. In the Local Printers category, select your receipt printer and click Continue.

  4. Enter information about the printer that will make it easy to identify, then click Continue.

    • Name: The recommended name is the model name of the printer.

    • Description: Enter any description that makes the printer easy to identify.

    • Location: Enter any description that makes it easy to tell where the printer is in your facility.

  5. From the Model menu, select the make and model of your printer, then click Add Printer.

  6. If you have a cash drawer connected to your receipt printer, you can set it to pop open automatically when the printer starts printing a receipt:

    1. Click Cash Drawer Control.

    2. From the Cash Drawer menu, select Open Drawer 1.

    3. Click Set as Default Option.

Select the printer in MJ Platform

  1. Ensure QZ Tray is running.

  2. For testing purposes, allow receipts and labels to be printed before a sale is completed:

    1. Open the App Drawer, expand the Facility Settings menu and click Settings (Advanced).

    2. Under Compliance, click Sales.

    3. Under System, set the Print Retail Labels & Receipts Without Payment option to Yes, then click Save at the bottom of the page.

  3. Start an order for any patient and add inventory to it. Fulfill the order and go to the Payment page.

  4. Click View/Print Receipt.

  5. Click Select a printer, then select the checkbox next to your printer and choose the DPI setting that matches your printer. Click Close at the bottom of the modal when you're done.
