Overview
As part of an upcoming platform update, the Product Master (PM) structure is changing. This update eliminates the parent-child hierarchy and introduces a one-size-per-product model with clearer inventory behavior for bulk vs. packaged products.
This article explains what’s changing, how it affects both new and existing Product Masters, and how to create and manage Product Masters going forward.
What’s Changing
1. Parent-Child Hierarchy Removed
Previously:
Selecting the Pre-Pack checkbox when creating a Product Master automatically generated child Product Masters for each standard size (e.g., 1g, 3.5g, 7g).
These child products were hierarchically linked to the original Product Master (the “parent”).
Now:
The parent-child structure has been removed.
Each Product Master is now a standalone record.
The Pre-Pack option is no longer used to generate children.
2. Pre-Pack Behavior Has Changed
The Pre-Pack checkbox has been removed. Going forward, the system will use the Sales UOM field to distinguish between unit-based and bulk products:
Flower and Concentrate Products with Sales UOM = EA (Each):
Tracked as discrete packaged units.
The Medicated Net Weight field defines the unit weight (e.g., 1g, 3.5g, 7g, 500mg, 1000mg).
Treated as individual items in inventory.
Products with Sales UOM = GR (Gram):
Used for bulk/non-prepackaged items.
Tracked and sold by weight.
Note: Existing Flower and Concentrate Product Masters that previously displayed Inventory Unit of Measure will now display Sales UOM instead. This makes it clear whether the product is sold by weight (GR) or as discrete units (EA).
3. One Product Master Per Size
Each Product Master now supports only one Medicated Net Weight. If you offer the same product in multiple sizes, you must create a separate Product Master for each size. This change will be automated for existing products with multiple sizes at the time of the update and will not require inputs or actions from users for those products.
How to Create Product Masters Going Forward
A. Bulk Products (Sold by Weight)
Use this flow if the product is sold deli-style/by weight.
Go to the Product Master creation page.
Enter product details (e.g., product name, category).
Set Sales UOM = GR (Gram).
Fill in other required fields.
Save the Product Master.
B. Prepackaged Products (Sold in Discrete Units)
Use this flow if the product is sold in defined unit sizes.
Go to the Product Master creation page.
Enter product details (e.g., product name, category).
Set Sales UOM = EA (Each).
Enter the Medicated Net Weight to define the unit size (e.g., 1g, 3.5g, 7g, 500mg, 1000mg).
Fill in other required fields.
Save the Product Master.
(Optional) Use Save and Duplicate to quickly create another version with a different Medicated Net Weight.
What Happens to Existing Product Masters
You won’t need to take any action.
When this update is released, the system will automatically update your existing Product Masters to match the new one-size-per-Product-Master model.
All parent Product Masters will be archived and will no longer be used.
Archived parent Product Masters cannot be used for scanning, inventory, or integrations. This includes their SKU/Product Master ID.
Any child Product Masters will remain active and will now function as standalone Product Masters.
Products that previously supported multiple sizes will be converted into separate Product Masters for each size, each with its own Sales UOM and Medicated Net Weight.
All existing inventory data, transaction history, and reporting will remain intact.
Why This Change Matters
Clearer structure: Simplifies product setup and removes hidden hierarchy.
Improved tracking: Ensures accurate unit vs. weight-based inventory control.
Streamlined workflows: Easier to manage compliance, transfers, and reporting.
FAQs
Q: Do I still need to select “Pre-Pack”?
A: No. The Pre-Pack checkbox has been removed. Use the Medicated Net Weight field for Flower and Concentrate products with Sales UOM = EA. Bulk products should continue using Sales UOM = GR.
Q: What happens to existing parent/child Product Masters?
A: All Product Masters will now be treated as individual items. Previously linked children will now exist independently.
Q: Can I still use the same Item Number/SKU for different sizes?
A: No. "Parent" Product Masters will no longer exist, so the "parent" Product Master's Item Number will no longer be usable for scanning, reporting, or integration purposes.
You will be able to edit the Item Number/SKU of any previously existing child Product Masters or newly created Product Masters.
Q: How do I know whether to set up a bulk or prepackaged product?
A: Use Sales UOM = GR for bulk products sold by weight (e.g., deli-style flower). Use Sales UOM = EA with Medicated Net Weight for prepackaged products (e.g., 1g, 3.5g, 500mg, 1000mg).
